A character song... I'm often irritated by the amplified bellowing of street preachers (I grew up with them, every Saturday afternoon on Church Street in Coleraine), but I did used to accept gospel tracts from time to time, handed out by those silent men and women who would politely offer them to passersby. It seemed rude not to, after they had been standing in the cold for hours. I would find them in my pockets later and mostly feel that it wasn't the easiest job in the world.

Billy hands out gospel tracts
to the people in the city.
The vast majority pass him by,
and they rarely catch his eye
- or they regard him with a weary kind of pity.

Of all the jobs he does for Jesus,
it’s the one he hates the most.
He hardly seems to make a dent,
for all the hours that he’s spent,
cold and pale as a harmless little ghost.

Some folks are downright nasty,
one guy spat down at his feet.
And all the young ones stand and laugh,
and tear the Word of God in half
- Billy always tries to turn the other cheek.
